Important Customer Alert: Protect Yourself Against Recent Cyber Threats

Dear Customer,

We want to make you aware of a serious cyber security issue currently affecting thousands of Australians.

Over 31,000 Australian banking customers have had their personal details leaked by cybercriminals. This is due to a sharp increase in the use of ‘InfoStealer’ malware – malicious software that infects personal devices and collects sensitive information saved in browsers, such as:

  • Passwords
  • Credit card details
  • Crypto wallets
  • Cookies
  • Browsing history
  • Auto-fill data

Worryingly, these stolen banking credentials, including usernames and passwords, have been shared across multiple websites, sometimes for free. While banks have robust anti-fraud protections in place, individuals affected by these leaks are still at risk of financial loss.

What you should do to stay safe:

  • Ensure all your personal and work devices are kept up to date with the latest Windows and antivirus software updates.
  • Regularly change your passwords, especially for banking and other sensitive accounts.
  • Avoid saving passwords and sensitive information in your web browser.
  • Monitor your bank accounts closely for any unusual activity.
  • Consider using a trusted password manager for added security.

We all play a role in staying cyber aware, and sharing information to protect our customers, employees and family. We suggest you can read more about this development here: ABC News: Australian Bank Customers Targeted.

Stay safe, The RBC Technology Group Team
